Derek Lam will return to Derek Lam 10 Crosby as creative director, less than a year after NYC Alliance acquired the New York label from Public Clothing Co. in May 2026. His first creative direction under the new ownership will reach the market for fall 2027 selling.
The appointment puts the founder back at the brand he sold to Public Clothing Co. in January 2020, where he served as chief creative officer before leaving in 2023. Public Clothing retains the mainline Derek Lam brand, which creative director Robert Rodriguez continues to design.
Wen Huang, head of branding and marketing at NYC Alliance, framed the hire as the anchor of the acquisition strategy. "From the beginning, we had a very clear vision for Derek Lam 10 Crosby's future. Bringing Derek back was central to that vision. No one understands the brand's heritage and design philosophy better than its founder," Huang said, adding that the company plans to expand the brand through its global distribution network, operational expertise and omnichannel capabilities.
For sourcing and channel teams, the distribution plan is concrete: Lam said the label will remain contemporary and will be wholesaled at department and specialty stores. He also cited NYC Alliance's vertical structure as a decisive factor in his return.
"They have other brands, of course, so they are very set up to grow and develop quickly, so it's nice to be a part of that situation," Lam said. NYC Alliance's portfolio includes 525 America and 89th and Madison, plus licensed businesses Juicy Couture and Frye. Earlier this month, Derek Lam 10 Crosby and 525 America revealed a limited-edition collaboration, the first visible cross-brand move since the acquisition.
Lam's operational setup is split-locational. He moved full-time to Paris roughly three years ago and will commute between Paris and New York. "For now, I'm going to just be there like a week or so [in October] and then obviously when things develop, [we'll figure out] the timing they need," he said. He will also continue consulting as creative director for Câllas Milano, the label launched in 2020 by his husband Jan-Hendrik Schlottmann and Marco Panzeri, CEO of Italian manufacturer Cieffe — a parallel commitment brands and vendors negotiating with 10 Crosby will want to factor into design-lead timelines.
The brand's recent history adds context to the relaunch risk. Lam launched his namesake brand in 2003 with Schlottmann, closed the luxury Derek Lam Collection line in 2019 to concentrate on 10 Crosby, and exited the business in 2023, describing the departure as a personal decision to take a break and relocate to Paris. On his return, he said: "It was just a really interesting reach-out, and I thought there was something terrific about them reaching out and trying to bring what has been done and what I could bring new to starting again."
Lam came up in the early 2000s with a cohort of New York labels including Proenza Schouler, Jason Wu, Thakoon and Phillip Lim, building his business on sportswear, tailoring, outerwear, leather and fur. He was runner-up for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2005 and won the CFDA Emerging Designer Award the same year, and served as Tod's ready-to-wear creative director from 2005 to 2010.
Under NYC Alliance, the stated plan is to broaden 10 Crosby's product offering, enter new channels and new markets while maintaining its New York design identity. Those expansion targets remain announced intentions rather than confirmed results; the first measurable test will be how the fall 2027 line lands with department and specialty wholesale partners under a founder back on a transatlantic schedule.
