Pence 1979 opened its first flagship store in Milan on Thursday, and it sits inside a restaurant. The Italian contemporary brand, owned by holding company IPO SpA, debuted the boutique on Via San Carpoforo within Salotto Orsini, a new dining venue in the Brera district that shares the same parent company.

The store occupies the lower floor of the restaurant and keeps unusual hours for a fashion boutique: it opens at 11:30 a.m. and runs until 10 p.m. on weekends. The scheduling is deliberate — Pence 1979 aims to convert restaurant traffic into retail traffic, drawing Salotto Orsini's clientele down a black stone staircase to the sales floor.

What does the location signal?

The flagship marks a structural step in the brand's repositioning under new ownership. Pence 1979 was acquired in 2021 by IPO Fashion & Design, a division of the holding. In 2024 the brand terminated its previous manufacturing license and brought operations in-house, a move that gives it direct control of production and distribution decisions.

CEO Marco Tiburzi framed the Milan opening as the conclusion of that process.

"Since the brand was acquired, we have undertaken a process not only of reinterpreting and updating it, but also of repositioning it. That involved important strategic decisions… and the final piece that we were missing was engaging in a direct dialogue with the market," Tiburzi said.

The flagship is that dialogue: a company-owned retail channel, in a prime Milan district, operated adjacent to a sister business.

How does retail-hospitality integration work here?

The layout separates men's and women's ready-to-wear onto opposite walls of a small, vaulted-ceiling space with red brick, wooden displays and beige marble flooring. The restaurant above, with menu curated by chef Gaia Giordano, supplies the footfall.

Tiburzi tied the concept to a shared value proposition between the two businesses.

"The idea stemmed from a strong alignment of values [with Salotto Orsini] including the idea of reclaiming time for ourselves," he said. "When we talk about the Italian way of life, it's something we take for granted, but it's highly appealing elsewhere — and that's what we're offering here: a taste of it."

Bruno Lucisano, founder and CEO of Salotto Orsini, described the commercial logic in direct terms.

"We were really committed to bringing together the two seemingly different worlds [of hospitality and fashion] that aren't so different, but rather both rooted in lifestyle and experience. They move at the same pace, and we wanted to create a space where you could come in for a coffee and end up buying a piece of clothing, or vice versa," Lucisano said.

What is the distribution picture?

Pence 1979 holds a strong retail footprint in Italy and limited distribution abroad, with presence in other European countries and Japan. The company did not disclose sales figures, investment amounts for the flagship or projected store openings.

For sourcing and channel professionals, the model presents a test case: shared ownership removes landlord and partner negotiation from the equation, while the in-house manufacturing shift of 2024 consolidates supply-side control. Whether the restaurant-anchored format scales beyond one location remains the open question.

The brand was founded in 1979 by Otello Zecchin in the outskirts of Venice as a men's pantmaker.
