More than 11 brands are preparing products on Polartec's redesigned Alpha insulation platform, with Patagonia first in line through an exclusive style arriving in November. The patent-pending construction targets two long-standing commercial liabilities of the material — snagging and shedding — as brands push Alpha out of jacket linings and into visible, standalone layers.

The Milliken & Co.-owned manufacturer said it spent more than four years prototyping and testing with performance brands. The goal was structural integrity without sacrificing the open architecture that gives Alpha its airflow and thermoregulation. Polartec is also widening the range of constructions, weights and textures, which hands designers more control over hand feel and appearance.

"Our challenge was to make Alpha more durable and versatile without sacrificing the structure responsible for its performance," said Karen Beattie, director of product management at Polartec. The patent-pending construction "allows us to preserve what people value about Alpha while giving designers a stronger and more adaptable platform for what comes next."

Ornot, Purple Mountain Observatory, Senchi Designs, Farpointe and Goldwin are among the brands expected to use the new construction or Alpha with Wool for fall and winter 2026. One gap is worth noting for sourcing teams: Polartec did not provide comparative snagging, shedding or durability results with the announcement. The durability claim, in other words, is currently a manufacturer's assertion rather than a published dataset.

What does the UV-PFAS finding change?

Scientists at the University of California, Riverside have mapped the chemical reactions that destroy PFAS using ultraviolet light and sulfite, publishing their findings in Nature Water. Hydrated electrons generated by the UV-sulfite combination attack carbon-fluorine bonds, releasing fluoride into the water, while hydroxyl radicals and hydroxide ions sever carbon-carbon bonds in the remaining chains. The shorter-chain compounds can then undergo further defluorination.

The work matters for textile mills facing tightening restrictions on "forever chemicals," historically used for water, grease and stain resistance. It also corrects earlier degradation mechanisms that, according to the researchers, rested largely on assumptions rather than experimental evidence.

"Knowing this degradation mechanism gives us a better understanding of how to optimize the conditions for PFAS destruction and achieve deeper degradation," said Jinyong Liu, an associate professor of chemical and environmental engineering and the study's corresponding author. Refining treatment conditions remains laboratory work for now; it is not yet a commercial wastewater offering mills can procure.

Pontetoro's biobased fleece takes the Eco Award

Italian mill Pontetorto won the Performance Days Eco Award for Fleece 6140/Biobased, a polyester microfleece using wood-derived feedstock from UPM under a mass-balance system. Inputs come from wood-industry residues — small branches, leaves, sawmill byproducts — sourced from FSC- and PEFC-certified forests.

Under mass-balance accounting, renewable and fossil inputs are combined in production, with an allocated share attributed to the renewable feedstock rather than physically segregated. Pontetorto claims a smaller carbon footprint than conventional polyester at comparable comfort and performance, but did not specify the savings or the biobased content percentage. UPM began commercial production of renewable glycols at its Leuna, Germany, biorefinery in late 2025 — a supply signal worth watching for polyester buyers.

"We accept this award with pride and a sense of responsibility," said general manager Marco Toccafondi.

Outerknown swaps plastic for Manteco wool

Outerknown expanded its Woolaroo collection for fall 2026 with fleece made from Manteco's MWool recycled wool — 100 percent recycled fiber from secondhand garments, factory scraps and other pre- and post-consumer materials, with colors created by fiber blending rather than new dyes. "Most fleece is just plastic in disguise," said co-founder and creative director John Moore. The range — jackets, vests, hoodies, shirt jackets — is available now.

Briefly: Hyosung and Wulcea

Hyosung TNC supplied its Regen Askin recycled polyester yarn for official shirts at Smtown Run Club 26, the SM Entertainment event held Oct. 3 in Incheon, South Korea, and gathered participant feedback to guide future material development. Wulcea, meanwhile, launched heated jackets using graphene elements across six heating zones, three temperature settings, a 12-volt system with a 131-degree-Fahrenheit cutoff, and up to 10 hours of warmth on the lowest setting from an 18,400mAh battery — heating begins within three seconds.

Expect the Alpha rollout's November Patagonia debut to be the first commercial test of whether the reworked construction holds up where consumers can see it.
