Saks Fifth Avenue will restage its Fifth Avenue holiday light show on Nov. 23, one year after resuming a tradition the retailer canceled in 2024 to cut costs. The 2026 "Main Character Energy" campaign is centered on the Manhattan flagship at 611 Fifth Avenue, a single location that now anchors a Saks store base contracted from 33 to 15 doors during the retailer's bankruptcy.

The campaign launched Tuesday and features a film directed and shot by Nadine Ijewere, with creative personalities Ruby Lyn, Stella Jones, Solange Smith, Luna Yohannan, Divine Mugisha and George McNally moving through the store. Six windows along the flagship's facade will depict a holiday journey through New York City, and additional gallery windows will display fashions drawn from the holiday assortment.

The activation is the first large-scale customer-facing event since Saks, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman emerged from Chapter 11 in June under new owner Exemplar Luxury Group. With the store network more than halved, the Manhattan flagship carries a heavier share of group traffic and revenue than it did before the restructuring, a concentration that increases the return on holiday marketing spend and the cost of any execution misstep.

What does the flagship now mean for the Saks network?

The retailer operated 33 stores before bankruptcy and now runs 15, a 55% reduction that has concentrated the brand's physical presence around its strongest doors. Saks has not disclosed the flagship's percentage of group sales, but the building's role as a tourist destination, advertising asset and brand showcase has grown in step with the store closures.

The light show typically draws a shoulder-to-shoulder crowd of thousands and blocks Fifth Avenue traffic for a performance element. Saks canceled the event in 2024 as part of a cost-reduction program, reinstated it last year and is now extending elements of the activation to additional markets.

How is the campaign constructed?

Bread Financial, the official payment sponsor of Saks' 2026 holiday season, will stage a series of events at select Saks locations beyond the flagship. The campaign also supports Make-a-Wish through fundraising activity.

The Saks Fifth Avenue Holiday Gift Guide is organized by category:

  • Party outfits for women
  • Holiday dressing for men
  • Beauty products
  • Gifts priced under $200

A holiday market at the flagship offers decor, gifts, epicure, snow globes and globally sourced merchandise, with a life-size Santa and dancing penguins as in-store installations.

What are executives saying?

"Saks Fifth Avenue brings the magic of the holidays to life through extraordinary luxury offerings, personalized service and a spirit of joy and discovery that delights our customers," said Darcy Penick, president and chief commercial officer of Exemplar Luxury Group. "With their distinctive tastes and desires at the heart of our approach, we've thoughtfully curated our holiday assortment and experiences to inspire every celebration."

Cheryl Han, chief marketing and digital officer at ELG, framed the creative platform: "With Main Character Energy, we wanted to capture the joy and magic of the holidays — the unexpected discoveries, moments of delight and sense of possibility that make this time of year so special. Bringing that spirit to life across Saks, from our Fifth Avenue flagship to saks.com, gives us an opportunity to make holiday shopping feel inspiring, playful and full of surprise."

What is at stake for the post-bankruptcy reset?

ELG acquired Saks, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman in a June transaction that took the three retailers out of Chapter 11 with a reduced footprint and a unified management structure. Holiday campaigns typically deliver the largest share of annual revenue at U.S. luxury department stores, and this season is the first opportunity for the new owner to translate the bankruptcy resolution into a trading update.

The four-week sprint from Nov. 23 through Christmas will set the baseline for the first full quarter under ELG ownership and indicate whether the slimmed store base can support a return to growth at a moment when high-end consumers have continued to pull back on discretionary apparel.
